An Insider's Guide into the Hong Kong Art Scene

Sundaram Tagore Gallery

By Gili Karev

This two-story, hard wood floored gallery is a beautiful edition to Hollywood Rd’s endless art venues. On a street renowned for its ubiquitous galleries (not all of which are worth a visit), Sundaram Tagore maintains a classy, sophisticated feel that is neither uninviting nor pretentious. With additional galleries in both New York and Beverley Hills, Sundaram is dedicated to examining the diverse communication between Western and non-Western artistic influence.

Currently exhibited is international, award-winning American photographer John McDermott in his Hong Kong debut of Spirit and Stone, a series of monochromatic images from Angor Wat, Cambodia. McDermott has been travelling Asia for the past twenty years in order to capture the essence of sacred historical monuments and their modern surroundings. The photographs exhibited are taken from an extensive hard-cover publication of McDermott’s documentation of Angkor Wat between 1975 and 2000. The book, Elegy: Reflections on Angkor, has received international acclaim since its publication in 2009. It is also available for viewing at the gallery.

57 – 59 Hollywood Road, Central. +852.2581.9678. Hours: Monday – Saturday 10am – 7pm, Sunday 11am- 7pm
